Plainville is a small city in southwestern Gordon County, Georgia, in the Ridge-and-Valley province of the state's northwest corner. The 2020 census counted 353 residents, and the city covers less than one square mile, making it one of Gordon County's smaller incorporated municipalities alongside Calhoun, Fairmount, Ranger, and Resaca. Gordon County as a whole counted 57,544 residents in 2020, with Calhoun serving as its principal city and county seat. The city's geography is defined by the Oostanaula River, which bends just west of town in an area known locally as "the Bend." Plainville sits about three miles east of that bend, with Georgia State Highway 53 passing a mile and a half to the east. That highway links the city northeast about eight miles to Calhoun and southwest about fourteen miles to Rome, positioning Plainville roughly halfway between the two regional centers. Plainville is primarily a residential community. Public education is provided by the Gordon County School District, based in Calhoun, which serves Plainville and the other incorporated and unincorporated communities of the county. Employment, shopping, and services are concentrated in Calhoun and Rome, both short drives along the Highway 53 corridor. The town's character is quiet and rural, set among the rolling ridges and valleys of northwest Georgia and framed by the Oostanaula's river bottom. Its southern boundary touches the Floyd County line, placing it at the edge of the Rome area's influence as well. For residents, Plainville offers a low-density, small-town setting with convenient access to the larger economies of Calhoun and Rome, and to Interstate 75 by way of Calhoun for travel toward Chattanooga and Atlanta. It remains a compact, unhurried community in a region shaped by its river and its ridgelines.
