Hamilton is a city in Harris County, Georgia, and serves as the county seat, located near the center of the county in the west-central part of the state. It is part of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area, sitting about 25 miles north of Columbus along the U.S. 27 corridor. With a population of roughly 1,700 and an area of just over two square miles, Hamilton is a compact county-seat community in a region of rolling hills, woodlands, and small farms. The city was incorporated in 1828 and has anchored Harris County's government for much of the county's history. Its most prominent landmark is the Harris County Courthouse, built in 1908 and designed by architect Edward Columbus Hosford, which stands on the National Register of Historic Places and remains the visual and civic centerpiece of the town. The courthouse square and surrounding streets reflect Hamilton's long role as the administrative heart of the county. Education and local government are closely tied to the city. The Harris County School District is headquartered in Hamilton and operates a network of elementary, intermediate, middle, and high schools serving communities across the county, making the town a daily hub for students and families. County government operations are likewise centered here, reinforcing the city's function as a small but essential service town. Hamilton's setting also places it near some of west Georgia's best-known attractions. Callaway Gardens, a 2,500-acre resort and garden complex in nearby Pine Mountain, offers gardens, golf, hiking and biking trails, and water sports on Robin Lake, while the Blue Springs recreation area provides a quieter natural setting. The U.S. 27 corridor connects Hamilton south to Columbus and north toward LaGrange, giving residents a rural, county-seat lifestyle with practical access to the region's larger employment, shopping, and cultural centers.
