The city's modern shape was set in the years after World War II, when General Motors opened an assembly plant in 1947 that became the community's anchor employer. The plant turned out more than nine million vehicles over six decades, drawing workers and their families to the surrounding residential streets and giving Doraville a strong working-class, company-town identity. That era ended in 2008, when the plant closed and the roughly 160-acre site sat idle for years. Its redevelopment, branded Assembly, has since repositioned the city as a hub for film and media production, studio space, offices, and residences clustered around a central park. The transformation has added a new, walkable district near the MARTA station while the older neighborhoods retain their mid-century character. Doraville is also known across metro Atlanta for Buford Highway, a corridor that runs through the city and hosts one of the Southeast's most celebrated concentrations of international restaurants, bakeries, and specialty grocers. That corridor's influence has made Doraville a dining destination far beyond its borders and helped shape a notably diverse population drawn from many countries and cultures. The city is compact — about 3.6 square miles — with a population of roughly 10,600. It is bordered by Chamblee, Dunwoody, and unincorporated DeKalb County, and it sits directly on the MARTA Gold Line, whose northern terminus anchors the community. The combination of rail transit, immediate access to two interstates, a dense globe-spanning food scene, and an emerging media district makes Doraville a practical and culturally rich base within the Atlanta region, suited to commuters, families, and creatives alike.
