Blue Ridge Foothills County Seat
Rentals in Toccoa, GA
Welcome to Toccoa, a northeast Georgia foothills town home to the 186-foot Toccoa Falls and the World War II paratrooper legacy of Currahee Mountain.
Toccoa is a city and the county seat of Stephens County, Georgia, set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the state's northeast corner. About 90 miles northeast of Atlanta and roughly 50 miles from Athens, it serves as the commercial and civic center for a largely rural county of about 27,000 people. The city itself had 9,133 residents in the 2020 census, and its name derives from a Cherokee word meaning "beautiful." The community's defining natural feature is Toccoa Falls, a 186-foot free-falling waterfall on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, among the tallest falls east of the Mississippi River. The waterfall and the college, a private Christian liberal-arts institution, sit at the heart of town and draw visitors throughout the year. Beyond the falls, the surrounding landscape is marked by rolling hills, lakes, and mountain vistas that distinguish northeast Georgia from the flatter Piedmont to the south. Toccoa also holds a notable place in military history. Currahee Mountain, which rises just outside town, was the site of Camp Toccoa, the World War II training ground for the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment whose story was told in "Band of Brothers." Recruits ran the mountain's slopes — "three miles up, three miles down" — and the Currahee Military Museum preserves that legacy today. The name Currahee, from the Cherokee, means "stands alone." Local life blends small-town practicality with outdoor recreation. Stephens County Schools serve the area, North Georgia Technical College offers workforce training, and Toccoa Falls College anchors higher education. Residents enjoy parks such as Henderson Falls and Paul Anderson Park, the Traveler's Rest State Historic Site, and easy access to Lake Hartwell and Lake Yonah for boating and fishing. Toccoa offers an attainable foothills lifestyle with genuine history, strong community institutions, and proximity to the recreation of the North Georgia mountains.
