Railroad Town at the I-20 Gateway

Farms & Ranches in Temple, GA

Welcome to Temple, a small city split between Carroll and Haralson counties that grew up along the Georgia Pacific Railroad and now sits near Interstate 20 west of Atlanta.

Temple is a small city in west Georgia that straddles Carroll and Haralson counties, positioned along the Interstate 20 corridor between Atlanta and the Alabama line. The town traces its origins to the Georgia Pacific Railroad, which was being built through the area between Atlanta and Birmingham when settlement began in 1882; Temple was founded the following year and named for Major Robert H. Temple, a Civil War veteran and the railroad's chief engineer. For much of its history, Temple's heartbeat was the rail line that carried passengers and freight through town, and its compact historic core grew up around the depot and early commercial buildings. In recent decades, growth has migrated closer to Interstate 20, where newer residential and commercial development has clustered, while the original downtown has seen reinvestment as older buildings are repurposed. The housing mix spans older in-town homes near the depot and newer subdivisions near the interstate, with rural acreage beyond the city limits. With a population of roughly 5,100, Temple functions as a small-town residential community within commuting reach of the Atlanta metro and larger west Georgia hubs such as Villa Rica and Carrollton. Carroll County Schools operates the public campuses in town, including Temple High School, and the community holds a small place in Georgia school history: the Georgia High School Association was founded in Temple in 1903. The area around the city is rolling west Georgia countryside, with the Little Tallapoosa River and nearby preserves such as Clinton Nature Preserve and Little Tallapoosa Park offering outdoor access. Daily life is quiet and family-oriented, centered on the schools, churches, and city recreation programs rather than a large commercial core. Temple's blend of railroad heritage, interstate convenience, and small-town pace gives it the feel locals sometimes describe as Carroll County's Best Kept Secret.
