Farms & Ranches in Whitesburg, GA
Welcome to Whitesburg, a small Carroll County town on the Chattahoochee River, about 48 miles southwest of Atlanta, known for its Creek heritage and outdoor recreation.
Whitesburg is a small town in western Carroll County, Georgia, set on the Chattahoochee River roughly 48 miles southwest of Atlanta. The 2020 census counted 596 residents. The area's human history reaches back to the indigenous peoples of the region and, by the early nineteenth century, to the Creek Confederacy, whose Coweta Towns lay nearby. The town's most significant historical figure is William McIntosh, a Scotch-Coweta chief and brigadier general who signed treaties ceding Creek lands to the United States and was killed by Upper Creeks in 1825. His reconstructed log home and burial site are preserved at McIntosh Reserve, a 527-acre park along the Chattahoochee just outside Whitesburg. The reserve remains both a historic site and a recreation destination, with trails, fishing ponds, and river access. Whitesburg's modern identity is shaped by the Chattahoochee River and the outdoor recreation it supports. The river is a popular paddling route, with outfitters and boat access serving kayakers and canoeists, and nearby Chattahoochee Bend State Park offers riverside camping and hiking. The town is also home to Historic Banning Mills, an adventure and conservation center in the Snake Creek Gorge that holds Guinness World Records for the world's largest zipline canopy course and tallest freestanding climbing wall. Public education is provided by the Carroll County School District, with Whitesburg Elementary School located in town and older students attending other schools in the district. The town's small size, river access, and proximity to Carrollton and metro Atlanta give it a distinctly rural character with convenient regional connections.
