West Georgia Rail Town
Condos & Apartments in Waco, GA
Welcome to Waco, a small Haralson County city near the Alabama state line where a late-nineteenth-century railroad heritage still frames a quiet, rural-suburban pace of life.
Waco is a small city in Haralson County, in the rolling terrain of west Georgia, a few miles from the Alabama state line and roughly 46 miles west of downtown Atlanta. The 2020 census counted 536 residents. Waco grew up as a stop along the Southern Railway after the railroad pushed through the county in the late nineteenth century, and the arrival of the line gave the settlement a depot-centered commercial district that shaped its early growth. Much of that early frame of buildings survives along the main streets, giving the city a historic, compact footprint. Because the town has remained small, most of its day-to-day services, shopping, and civic institutions are found a short drive away in the larger Haralson County communities of Bremen and Tallapoosa. Bremen, just to the west, sits on Interstate 20, placing Waco within easy reach of both the Atlanta region to the east and the Alabama line and Birmingham corridor to the west. Tallapoosa, the district's administrative center, lies to the north. Waco's character is a blend of suburban and rural: modest residential streets near the old town center give way quickly to wooded lots, pasture, and scattered homes on larger parcels. Many residents commute to jobs in Bremen, Tallapoosa, Carrollton, or the Atlanta suburbs. Retirees and families drawn to lower-density living are well represented, and the community is known for a close-knit, small-town identity. For newcomers, Waco offers the essentials of rural west Georgia life — quiet streets, local churches, and a short drive to county schools and services — without being far removed from the interstate economy of metro Atlanta's western edge. The surrounding countryside of fields, creeks, and rolling Piedmont hills reinforces the unhurried character that defines the city today.
