Fayette County Small Town
Townhouses & Duplexes in Tyrone, GA
Welcome to Tyrone, a Fayette County town south of Atlanta known for large single-family lots, strong schools, and a rural-scale setting close to the city.
Tyrone is a town in Fayette County, Georgia, in the southern reaches of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its population was about 7,658 at the 2020 census, and it sits along State Route 74, the Joel Cowan Parkway, roughly twenty-five miles southwest of downtown Atlanta via the connection to Interstate 85 at Fairburn. The town's history is rooted in the land: the area was originally Creek Indian territory, settled by Irish and Scottish farmers in the late 1800s who found the rolling landscape reminiscent of home. The Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad named the settlement Tyrone when it laid tracks in 1907, and the town incorporated in 1911. For much of the twentieth century, Tyrone remained a farming community built around cotton, timber, and the neighbor-to-neighbor economy typical of small Fayette County towns. Metro Atlanta's southward expansion reached the area gradually after the 1970s, drawing new residents seeking land and privacy. Tyrone managed that growth deliberately, preserving its low-density, rural-scale character even as subdivisions arrived — a balance that remains central to the town's identity today. For residents, Tyrone offers a spacious, family-oriented alternative to denser suburbs. Fayette County Public Schools, one of Georgia's well-regarded districts, serves the town along with Brooks, Fayetteville, Peachtree City, and Woolsey, and local amenities include Shamrock Park with its lake and trails, Veterans Park, a public library, and a community center. The housing stock is almost exclusively single-family homes on large lots. The result is a quiet, green community with strong schools, convenient access to Peachtree City and Interstate 85, and downtown Atlanta within a half-hour drive.
