Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County, Georgia, set in the flat, fertile farmland of South Georgia's coastal plain. The town was platted in 1893 and incorporated in 1898, and it has long served as the commercial and government center of the county. Its origins trace to a railroad stop first known as Isabella Station, renamed in the 1890s for a prominent local family. Its identity is inseparable from agriculture: Worth County is a major peanut-producing county, Sylvester claims the title "Peanut Capital of the World," and the community hosts the annual Georgia Peanut Festival each October. The county is also home to a Peter Pan Peanut Butter plant, tying the town directly to the region's signature crop. The local economy runs on farming—peanuts, cotton, corn, pecans and produce—along with the processing, retail and government services that support a county seat. U.S. Highway 82 and Georgia State Route 33 cross in Sylvester, putting Albany, the region's largest city, about 20 miles to the west and making the town a waypoint between Albany and the Atlantic coast. Sylvester counted 5,644 residents in the 2020 census, and the community is predominantly Black, reflecting the demographic history of the rural South. The city's modest grid holds the Worth County courthouse, historic storefronts, churches and tree-shaded residential streets, while farmland begins almost immediately at the city limits. Public schools are consolidated under the Worth County School District.
