Suches is an unincorporated community in Union County, Georgia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the state's northeast corner, within the Chattahoochee National Forest about 90 miles north of Atlanta. At roughly 2,800 to 3,000 feet of elevation, it is one of the highest communities in Georgia, and its residents and boosters call it "the Valley Above the Clouds." The community takes its name from John Suches, an early settler who helped shape the area, and its remote, high-country setting has defined it from the beginning. The valley is closely linked to the history of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Suches is the birthplace of Arthur Woody, the celebrated forest ranger known as the "Barefoot Ranger," who was instrumental in the early reforestation and wildlife restoration of the north Georgia mountains in the early twentieth century. That legacy lives on in the forested ridges and public lands that surround the community, much of which now forms part of the national forest. Recreation is the heart of life in Suches. The community lies near Vogel State Park, one of Georgia's oldest state parks, and Blood Mountain, the highest summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, with Lake Trahlyta and miles of trails nearby. The Toccoa River and its tributaries offer trout fishing, and the winding state highways through the valley are a well-known destination for motorcyclists and scenic drivers. Dahlonega and Blairsville, the nearest towns, provide services and gateways to the wider region. Suches appeals to a narrow but devoted audience: hikers, anglers, riders, and families or retirees seeking a quiet mountain home at altitude, within reach of north Georgia's recreation but removed from its busier resort towns. Public education is provided by the Union County School District, based in Blairsville, which serves the communities of Blairsville and Suches together.
