Georgia's Southernmost Settlement

Farms & Ranches in St. George, GA

Welcome to St. George, the southernmost named settlement in Georgia, a Charlton County community near the St. Marys River and the Florida line.

St. George is an unincorporated community in Charlton County, in the far southeast corner of Georgia, south of the county seat of Folkston and a short distance from the Florida line. It holds the distinction of being the southernmost named settlement in the state, sitting amid the pine flatwoods and wetlands that characterize the region between the Okefenokee Swamp and the St. Marys River. The community has a colorful boom-town history. In the early twentieth century, a real estate and development push drew settlers from as many as 26 states, and St. George was built at remarkable speed — by some accounts, structures went up at the rate of one a day. The town soon reached roughly 1,000 residents and supported more than 50 businesses, along with a bank, hotels, a school, a newspaper, and churches, briefly making it a leading town of Charlton County. That rapid growth later subsided, and St. George settled into the quiet, rural role it occupies today. The St. George census county division counted about 2,237 residents in 2020, a figure that covers a broad swath of southern Charlton County beyond the community itself. Public school students attend the Charlton County School District, based in Folkston, and residents look to Folkston and the Jacksonville, Florida area for most commerce and services. St. George's surroundings are its defining asset: the Okefenokee Swamp lies to the west, the St. Marys River and the state line lie to the south, and the coastal communities of Camden County lie to the east. For those seeking rural Southeast Georgia living within reach of Florida's largest city, the area offers a distinctive blend of history, remoteness, and natural beauty.
