Million Pines County Seat

Rentals in Soperton, GA

Welcome to Soperton, the Treutlen County seat in southeast Georgia known as the Million Pines City, where the timber economy shaped a quiet rural community.

Soperton is the county seat of Treutlen County, in the southeastern portion of Georgia, set amid the region's piney woods roughly between Dublin to the northwest and Vidalia to the southeast. The 2020 census counted 2,889 residents. The city was established in 1902 and named for Benjamin Franklin Soper, an official with the Macon, Dublin and Savannah Railroad. The railroad's arrival helped the settlement grow, and Soperton soon became the seat of the newly organized Treutlen County. Even before the rail line reached town, however, the area's economy was built on timber, with pine supplying local cabinetmakers and turpentine stills. Soperton's defining identity is captured in its nickname, the "Million Pines City." The name is tied to James Fowler, a local landowner who planted some seven million slash pines across thousands of acres and helped pioneer the practice of growing pine as a cultivated crop, a development that reshaped Southern forestry and paper manufacturing in the twentieth century. Timber and forestry remain central to the local economy and landscape. Public education is provided by the Treutlen County School District, which operates elementary, middle, and high schools in the city. Community life revolves around the schools, churches, and the county courthouse, with the Million Pines Arts and Crafts Festival held each November drawing visitors to celebrate the town's heritage. Soperton's transportation links run through U.S. Highway 221, which carries State Routes 15 and 56 through town, while State Route 29 connects the area to Interstate 16 and the larger cities of central and coastal Georgia. This rural, timber-centered county seat offers a quiet pace of life within reach of Dublin, Vidalia, and the region's larger markets.
