Richmond Hill is a city in Bryan County, Georgia, situated about 12 miles south of Savannah along the U.S. 17 and Interstate 95 corridors. Its population was 16,633 at the 2020 census. The community began as a small railroad stop called Ways Station, but its identity was reshaped in the 20th century by one of America's most famous industrialists. Henry Ford and his wife Clara arrived in 1925 seeking a winter home and ultimately owned tens of thousands of acres across the area. Ford's presence brought schools, clinics, and infrastructure to the community, which took the name Richmond Hill during his time there. He also acquired and restored Fort McAllister, a Confederate earthwork fort on the Ogeechee River, opening it as a public historic site in the 1930s. Today the Richmond Hill History Museum, housed in the former Henry Ford Kindergarten, preserves that legacy. The city has grown into a residential and commercial hub for southern Bryan County and the Savannah region. Master-planned communities such as Waterways, with its lagoons, marina, and trails, and newer subdivisions have expanded the housing stock, while the Ogeechee River, tidal creeks, and coastal marshlands frame the landscape. Public schools fall under Bryan County Schools, with Richmond Hill High School serving the city. Recreation centers on Fort McAllister State Park, a 1,725-acre site offering a Civil War fort, museum, campground, and river access, along with nearby coastal attractions. For residents, Richmond Hill offers suburban living, a distinctive historical identity, and a short commute to Savannah and its regional employment.
