Pelham sits in southeastern Mitchell County, in the heart of southwest Georgia's farm country, at the crossroads of U.S. Route 19 and State Route 93. The 2020 census recorded 3,507 residents, down from 3,898 a decade earlier. The county seat of Camilla lies about eight miles northwest, while Thomasville is about twenty-five miles southeast, placing Pelham midway along one of the region's principal north-south highways. The city was incorporated in 1881 and named for Major John Pelham, a celebrated Confederate artillery officer killed during the Civil War. It grew as a market and rail town serving the surrounding cotton belt, and its most famous landmark is the Hand Trading Company building, a four-story retail emporium with nearly 100,000 square feet of floor space that opened in the mid-1910s and became the largest mercantile store in southwest Georgia — often described as an early "shopping mall." The building still defines Pelham's downtown and remains a point of civic pride. Agriculture remains the economic foundation. Cotton, peanuts, corn, and pecans dominate the surrounding fields, and processing operations tied to the peanut and cotton industries, including facilities linked to Golden Peanut Company, anchor local employment. Mitchell County's farm economy shapes the town's rhythms, from planting and harvest seasons to the farm-equipment dealerships along U.S. 19. Today Pelham functions as a small, close-knit agricultural city with its own school system. The Pelham City School District serves local students separately from the surrounding Mitchell County system, and the city's downtown, churches, and ball fields form the center of community life. Recreational life centers on the city's parks and sports fields, while the surrounding creeks and woodlands offer fishing and hunting.
