West Georgia Railroad City

Lots & Land in Manchester, GA

Welcome to Manchester, a west-central Georgia railroad city in Meriwether County, minutes from Warm Springs and the Little White House.

Manchester is a city in west-central Georgia, in the southern tip of Meriwether County along U.S. Route 27, with a portion of the city extending into neighboring Talbot County. The 2020 census recorded 3,584 residents, making Manchester the largest municipality in Meriwether County. Its location gives it a foot in two metropolitan areas: the Meriwether side lies within the Atlanta metro region, while the Talbot side falls within the Columbus metro area, though the two central cities are roughly 67 and 39 miles away respectively. The city was founded in 1907 and built around the railroad, earning the nickname "Magic City" for its rapid growth. Textile manufacturing arrived early — the Callaway Mills plant opened in 1909 — and for much of the twentieth century the mills and the rail yard anchored the local economy. Railroading remains central to Manchester's identity today: the CSX yard is a regional hub, and the city built the Southeast's first rail fan observation deck overlooking the tracks. Each October, the community holds Railroad Days, a celebration of that heritage with displays and memorabilia. Manchester's other defining connection is its proximity to Warm Springs, just four miles to the southeast. That small town became famous as Franklin D. Roosevelt's retreat, and its Little White House is one of Georgia's most visited historic sites, drawing visitors who often pass through Manchester. Meriwether County Schools serve the city, with Manchester High School, Manchester Middle School, and Mountain View Elementary located locally. For residents, Manchester offers a small-town west Georgia setting with railroad character, easy access to Warm Springs and Callaway Gardens, and reasonable highway links to Columbus, Atlanta, and the surrounding region. It combines a proud industrial and railroad past with the quiet pace of a small west Georgia city.
