Bowersville is a small incorporated town in Hart County, in Georgia's Piedmont near the South Carolina border. It sits at the junction of Georgia State Routes 17 and 51, a few miles west of Lake Hartwell, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir that straddles the Georgia–South Carolina line. State Route 17 runs north from Bowersville to Lavonia, where it meets Interstate 85, giving the town a short connection to the regional interstate system. The town's history reaches back to the 1880s, when it developed as one of the small railroad towns that grew up across Hart County. The Bowersville Academy was established on land W. F. Bowers donated for ten dollars in December 1882, and a hotel was operating by 1884. Contemporary accounts described Bowersville as thriving by 1887 and predicted it would "excel her sister railroad towns." That rail-era commercial character has settled into a quiet, mostly residential community, with pecan groves and agricultural land still marking the surrounding countryside. Today Bowersville is a compact rural town whose households are served by Hart County Schools. The district operates North Hart Elementary School and Air Line Elementary School in the Bowersville area, anchoring the community's family life. Residents look to nearby Hartwell, the county seat, for shopping and services, while Lake Hartwell provides recreation within a few miles. The town lies in rolling Piedmont terrain, and its older homes and churches along the state-route corridor reflect more than a century of rural Georgia settlement.
