Historic Town South of Athens
Farms & Ranches in Bishop, GA
Welcome to Bishop, a small Oconee County town with a National Register historic district, set a few miles south of Watkinsville on the road to Athens.
Bishop is a small incorporated town in Oconee County, Georgia, located along U.S. Highway 441 less than four miles south of Watkinsville, the county seat, and within the Athens–Clarke County metropolitan area. With roughly 330 residents, it is one of the more compact communities in a county known for its strong schools and its position on the edge of the University of Georgia's home city. The town's name honors William Henry Bishop, a native of Oconee County who farmed locally before serving in Cobb's Legion during the Civil War and later became a landowner and political figure. The community's early growth was tied to its position on the corridor between Watkinsville and points south, and much of the original townscape survives today. The Bishop Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, preserves a collection of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century homes and commercial buildings that give the town its distinctive sense of place. Many of these structures reflect the modest frame and brick construction typical of rural Georgia communities of the era, and they sit close to the highway that still forms the town's spine. Day-to-day life in Bishop is quiet and residential. Most residents own their homes, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of small farms, pasture, and wooded lots that reinforce the town's rural character. While Bishop itself offers a handful of antique shops and a campground, residents look to nearby Watkinsville for everyday services and to Athens, roughly ten miles to the north, for employment, higher education, dining, and cultural amenities. This balance of small-town quiet and easy access to a major university city defines the appeal of living in Bishop.
