Tudor-Inspired DeKalb County City
Lots & Land in Avondale Estates, GA
Welcome to Avondale Estates, a 1924 planned city in DeKalb County whose Tudor Revival architecture was inspired by Stratford-upon-Avon.
Avondale Estates is a small city in DeKalb County, Georgia, in the intown eastern suburbs of Atlanta, adjacent to Decatur and close to the Kirkwood and East Lake neighborhoods. With about 3,500 residents, it is one of the region's most architecturally distinctive communities — a planned 'English village' with a coherent Tudor Revival look. The city was founded in 1924 by George Francis Willis, a patent-medicine magnate who purchased the earlier village of Ingleside and set out to create a planned community inspired by a trip he and his wife took to Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He named the city for Stratford and designed its commercial and civic buildings in Tudor Revival style, with half-timbering, steep roofs, and decorative brickwork. That architectural identity — along with the city's historic downtown and its signature lake and park — has been carefully maintained, and Avondale Estates holds a distinctive place among Atlanta's intown municipalities. Avondale Estates is oriented along East College Avenue, with fast connections to Decatur, Scottdale, and Clarkston, and sits near the MARTA Blue Line, which links the area to downtown Atlanta and the airport. Its neighborhoods are compact and walkable, mixing the original 1920s-era homes with later mid-century and newer construction. Public education falls under the DeKalb County School District, with Avondale Elementary in the city, and the Museum School of Avondale Estates, a charter school, nearby. Emory University and the CDC are a short drive away. Avondale Estates suits buyers who want an intown, character-rich community with a real downtown, transit access, and quick routes to Decatur and central Atlanta.
